Overview

Vision and Mission of Department of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy of Sri Manakula Vinayagar Medical College & Hospital (SMVMCH), Puducherry in corporating Autonomous status document of UGC and inculcating of NEP 2020 and all 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Vision

To impart evidence based and inclusive medical education, quality and innovative patient care and ethical clinical research to become globally recognized centre of excellence in Dermatology, Venereology & Leprosy.

Mission

To inculcate clinical skills, professionalism, teaching and leadership skills among undergraduates and postgraduate and developing a career in Dermatology, Venereology & Leprosy.
To take part in interdisciplinary activities, develop effective patient collaboration, and provide comprehensive health care.
To strive for excellence in quality patient care and treatment with robust, infrastructure and sustainable health care delivery
To take active part in implementation of community and national level health programs in leprosy and sexually transmitted diseases with sustainable medical practices
To promote ethical clinical research with preference to socio economic, geographic & culture among undergraduates, postgraduates and faculty.

Generic Outcomes

To impart knowledge and skills that may enable the students to diagnose and treat common disorders and refer rare diseases or complications/unusual manifestations of common diseases in Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy.

Program Specific Outcomes (PSOs) – UG

Understanding of the principles in diagnosis in diseases of the skin, hair, nail and mucosa.
Ability to recognize, diagnose , order appropriate investigations and treat common diseases of the skin including leprosy in primary care setting and refer as appropriate.
A syndromic approach to the recognition, diagnosis, prevention, counseling, testing and management of common sexually transmitted diseases including HIV based on national health priorities.
Ability to recognize and treat dermatological emergencies including drug reactions and refer as appropriate.

Program Specific Outcomes (PSOs) – PG

At the end of 3 years of post-graduate training in Dermatology, Venereology & Leprosy.

Student should have knowledge of basic sciences (Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Pathology and Pharmacology) as applied to Dermatology, Venereology & Leprosy.
The Student should acquire in-depth knowledge of his subject including recent advances.
The student should be fully conversant with the bedside procedures (diagnostic and therapeutic) and having knowledge of latest diagnostics and therapeutics available.
Student should have acquired practical and procedural skills related to the subject.
Critically evaluate, initiate investigation and clinically manage cases in Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy with the help of relevant investigations.

Facilities

The Department offers Comprehensive out-patient and in-patient care for all diseases affecting the skin and mucosae, and systemic diseases with skin manifestations. The Outpatient department runs from 8.30 a.m. to 3.30 p.m. and provides care in various dermatological diseases.

A comprehensive care is given to various dermatological disorders ranging from common dermatological ailments to cosmetological problems with the various diagnostic facilities and instruments available.

Department Activities

Undergraduate Training

Includes both clinical classes and didactic lectures based on the syllabus prescribed by the NMC. The didactic lecture are scheduled weekly on 6th & 7th Semester.

The didactic lectures cover varied topics as prescribed by the National Medical Council. Besides lecture other methodology of teaching as role-play, clinical quiz and group discussion are adopted to inpatient student’s better knowledge of subject. Further modular teaching on Venereology, HIV, Leprosy, Connective tissue disorders is conducted to impart comprehensive knowledge to students. Image based teaching is another novel idea which has received wide acclaim.

Internship / CRMI Training:

The interns are trained in proper clinical examination; elicit and interpret physical finding, and diagnose common dermatological disorders. They are also trained to perform simple, routine investigative procedures for making bedside diagnosis, specially the examination of scraping for fungus, preparation of slit smears and staining for AFB for leprosy patient and for STD cases. They are also trained to take a skin biopsy for diagnostic purpose. Manage common diseases recognizing the need for referral for specialized care in case of inappropriateness of therapeutic response.

Post Graduate Training:

Training of Postgraduates is an important part of departmental activates. The postgraduates undergo full time residency program. The objective of the training course in MD Dermatology, Venereology & Leprosy are –

Diagnose and manage independently common skin disease, sexually transmitted disease and leprosy.
Manage independently and efficiently all medical emergencies related with skin, leprosy and venereal disease.
Adopt preventive measures at individual and community levels against communicable and non – communicable skin, Venereal disease and leprosy.
Teach requisite knowledge to the under graduate medical students.
To teach laboratory skills to other medical / paramedical team members.
Adopt a compassionate attitude towards the patients (and their families) under his / her charge.
To inculcate the principles of research methodology, so as to enable the resident to write scientific paper for thesis, publication in reputed journals and presentation in national and international conferences.

Teaching program

Academics are of paramount importance in our postgraduate residency program. Acquisition of practical competencies being the keystone of postgraduate medical education, postgraduate training is skill – oriented. Learning in postgraduate program is essentially self-directed and primarily emanating from clinical and academic work. The formal sessions are merely meant to supplement this core effect.

On the occasion of World Vitiligo Day 2026, the Department of Dermatology, Venereology, and Leprosy (DVL), SMVMCH, organized a Vitiligo Slogan Competition for third- and final-year undergraduate students. The competition was held on 25.06.2026 from 11:00 AM to 11:30 AM at the Fourth Floor Seminar Room, Hospital Block, and SMVMCH. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from undergraduate students, who presented creative and thought-provoking slogans aimed at promoting awareness about vitiligo and addressing the stigma associated with the condition. Based on the originality, relevance, and impact of the slogans, the best entries were selected and awarded as first, second, and third prizes. The winners were felicitated by the Head of the Department, Dr. K. Karthikeyan Sir, along with Dr. Youvalakshmi S., Senior Resident, and Dr. Ariharasudhan, Assistant Professor, Department of Dermatology, Venereology, and Leprosy, SMVMCH. On the occasion of World Vitiligo Day 2026, the Department of Dermatology, Venereology, and Leprosy (DVL), SMVMCH, organized a Vitiligo Quiz for postgraduate students. A preliminary written round was conducted to shortlist the top four teams for the final quiz. The final session commenced at 2:30 PM and comprised six interactive rounds designed to evaluate participants’ knowledge of vitiligo. Based on their cumulative scores, the top three teams were awarded the first, second, and third prizes. The winners and runner-ups were felicitated by the Head of the Department, Dr. K. Karthikeyan Sir, along with Dr. Vijayasankar, Associate Professor, Dr. Logamoorthy, Assistant Professor, and Dr. Ariharasudhan, Assistant Professor. The quiz was conducted by Dr. Youvalakshmi S, Senior Resident, Department of Dermatology, SMVMCH. Summary

PG Clinics 2026 was organized by the Department of Dermatology, SMVMCH, on 07.05.2026 and 08.05.2026, at the First Floor Book Reading Hall, College Block, SMVMCH. The program witnessed enthusiastic participation, with more than 100 postgraduate students attending from various institutions. Sessions were conducted from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on both days.

The main aim of the program was to strengthen residents’ clinical knowledge and improve their practical examination skills in dermatology. The sessions were specially designed to help postgraduate students prepare effectively for their final practical examinations.

Experienced faculty members from different institutions conducted interactive sessions covering all important components of the practical examination, including long cases, short cases, spotters, dermatopathology, dermatological instruments, and topical and systemic therapeutics.

The two-day academic program provided residents with practical approaches, useful examination tips, and expert guidance to improve their clinical skills and confidence. The event was well appreciated by the participants and served as a valuable learning experience in their postgraduate training.

On the occasion of STI Awareness Week 2026, the Department of Dermatology, Venereology, and Leprosy (DVL), SMVMCH, organized an STD quiz for postgraduate students. A preliminary round was conducted among first-year postgraduates using a written questionnaire, from which the top four postgraduates were selected for further rounds. The finalists were grouped into teams by draw of lots, with each team comprising three members: one final-year, one second-year, and one first-year postgraduate. The final quiz session commenced at 11:00 AM and consisted of nine rounds. At the end of the competition, three teams with the highest scores were announced as the 1 st, 2 nd, and 3rd prize winners. The Department of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy organized an STD awareness at RHTC, Thiruvennainallur, Villupuram District, Tamil Nadu, on 21Th April 2026 from 9:30 AM to 12:00 PM.

The awareness program began with a brief introduction on the importance of sexual health, personal hygiene, and prevention of sexually transmitted diseases among adolescents by Dr. Logamoorthy, Assistant Professor, Department of DVL, SMVMCH. Special emphasis was given to common sexually transmitted infections, their modes of transmission, early symptoms, preventive measures, and the importance of timely medical consultation. These topics were highlighted by postgraduate student Dr. Vanila.

Around 20 patients were attended the awareness session. The patients were educated about safe health practices, menstrual hygiene, prevention of infections, and the importance of avoiding stigma related to sexually transmitted diseases.

Interactive sessions allowed participants to ask questions and clarify doubts, making the program engaging and effective. Educational pamphlets and informational materials were distributed to reinforce the key message

The Dermalaunch 2026, organized by the Departments of Dermatology, SMVMCH, Puducherry, in collaboration with the IADVL, was successfully conducted on 26th and 27th February 2026 at the Own Book Reading Hall (1st Floor), SMVMCH. The two-day offline program provided a dynamic platform for first-year dermatology postgraduate residents to interact with experienced faculties and engage in academic discussions. The program witnessed enthusiastic participation from 94 delegates, including 75 residents from various institutions across Puducherry and Tamil Nadu, and 19 dermatology faculty members from leading institutions. This diverse participation fostered a vibrant learning environment, encouraging residents to present, discuss, and refine their dermatological knowledge. The event was meticulously organized under the guidance of the Organizing Chairperson, Dr. K. Karthikeyan, with Dr. R. Logamoorthy serving as the Organizing Secretary, and Dr. P. Vijayasankar as the Joint Secretary. The scientific sessions were chaired by Dr. R. Suganya and Dr. M.V. Ariharasudhan, who ensured that the sessions were engaging, informative, and aligned with current dermatological practices. Over the two days, participants attended a series of sessions covering a broad spectrum of dermatology topics for 1^st year postgraduate residents. Summary
As part of the World AIDS Day observance, Dr. Logamoorthy R, Assistant Professor of Dermatology, delivered an engaging and informative session to around 150 Allied Health Science students. The talk focused on creating awareness about HIV, emphasizing early detection, modes of transmission, prevention strategies, and the importance of eliminating stigma and discrimination. On the Occasion of World Leprosy Day, the Department of Dermatology, Venereology, and Leprosy organised an awareness session highlighting the latest advances in molecular diagnostics of Leprosy. The event started with an introduction by Dr Karthikeyan, Head of the Department, on the significance of World Leprosy Day and this year’s theme: Leprosy is curable: the real challenge is stigma. Around 45 postgraduate students from various medical colleges and in-house faculties from the Department of Microbiology attended the session. Dr Ann Mariam Jose, Research scientist, Molecular Biology Lab at the Scheffeilin Institute of Health Research Centre, Karigiri, Vellore, served as the keynote speaker. She delivered an insightful talk on contemporary strategies for the molecular diagnosis of Leprosy. Her presentation emphasised early detection of Leprosy through PCR. Advances and techniques in various types of PCR, the significance of drug resistance through animal models and also emphasised the importance of screening for primary drug resistance. Dr. K. Karthikeyan, Professor & HOD from the Department of Dermatology, moderated the session. She facilitated interactive Q&A segments, ensuring active participation and addressing queries on molecular diagnostics by faculties and postgraduates. The event underscored the college’s commitment to postgraduate medical education and leprosy eradication efforts in line with national goals. Participants appreciated the practical insights, with many expressing intent to integrate these into clinical practice.

As part of the World AIDS Day observance, Dr. Logamoorthy R, Assistant Professor of Dermatology, delivered an engaging and informative session to around 150 Allied Health Science students. The talk focused on creating awareness about HIV, emphasizing early detection, modes of transmission, prevention strategies, and the importance of eliminating stigma and discrimination.

Aligning with this year’s theme, “Overcoming disruption, transforming the AIDS response,” Dr. Logamoorthy highlighted the crucial role of healthcare students and community participation in improving HIV awareness, promoting safe practices, and supporting affected individuals. The session also addressed misconceptions about HIV and encouraged students to advocate for evidence-based knowledge and compassionate care. The audience actively participated in the interactive discussion, making the event impactful and educational. Following the session, Dr. Soundarya, Deputy Dean Academic (UG), felicitated Dr. Logamoorthy R for his valuable contribution and impactful talk.

The Department of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy conducted an HIV Awareness Campaign at the Rural Health Training Centre (RHTC), Thiruvennainallur, Villupuram District, Tamil Nadu on the occasion of World HIV Day 2025.

The program was held on 2^nd December 2025 from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm with the objective of increasing awareness about HIV transmission, prevention, early diagnosis, and the importance of eliminating stigma associated with HIV/AIDS.

The session began with an introductory talk on HIV/AIDS epidemiology and prevention strategies by Dr. Ariharasudhan M V, Senior resident, Department of DVL, SMVMCH. This was followed by detailed awareness presentations by postgraduate residents Dr. Vanila M who emphasized:

A total of 40 participants from the local community, including adolescents, women, and elderly attendees, took part in the awareness session. Free HIV screening was offered as part of the campaign in coordination with RHTC staff.

Educational pamphlets on HIV prevention and available health services were distributed. The community expressed appreciation for the initiative, and the RHTC medical officer provided a letter of acknowledgment for conducting the program.

The event successfully contributed to community-level sensitization about HIV/AIDS and promoted a positive health-seeking attitude among the rural population.

Summary

IADVL Puducherry and Department of Dermatology, SMVMCH together organized the first state IADVL level undergraduate quiz on Dermatology. A preliminary round was conducted for the 11 teams who attended, out of which, the teams that scored the top four marks entered the finals. The quiz master annonced the finalists and lot was taken to assign the order of teams. At the end of nine rounds of questioning, three teams with highest scores were chosen as the 1^st, 2^nd and 3^rd prize winners. The winners were fecilitated by the IADVL committee, Puducherry, medical superintendent, Dr.K.Karthikeyan and the quiz master. The participants enthusiastically answered every question and it enriched their knowledge in Dermatology. It also encouraged the audience to participate in future academic events.

Summary

On behalf of world psoriasis day 2025, a CME was organized on 28^th October for the postgraduates of departments of DVL and general medicine, SMVMCH. Dr.K.Karthikeyan, professor and head of Dermatology welcomed the gathering and gave a small jist of the cutaenous manifestations of psoratic disease. Dr.S.Girija, professor and head of general medicine, subsequently elaborated on the relationship between psoriasis and diabetes mellitus. Lastly, Dr.T.S.Ashida, cardiologist and professor, educated about the cardiovascular risk in psoriasis patients. The speakers were felicitated by the head of the department Dr.K.Karthikeyan sir. On 29^th October 2025, a reflective writing competition was organised for the postgraduates of Dermatology, in which residents reflected on their views about psoriasis. p>Both the events garnered positive feedback, enriching knowledge and awareness among physicians.

Summary

The Department of Dermatology at Sri Manakula Vinayagar Medical College proudly conducted the Trichoquest programme in observance of Hair Loss Awareness Month on 19th September 2025. The event was held from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the college premises and witnessed enthusiastic participation from 40 delegates, including postgraduate students from the Departments of Dermatology and Gynecology.

The programme featured expert-led discussions and case-based presentations focusing on various hair loss disorders. Key topics included a scientific review of Telogen Effluvium and its current challenges, management of male and female pattern hair loss emphasizing treatability, advances in scalp disorder treatment with selenium sulfide, and postpartum Telogen Effluvium along with identification of additional latent hair loss conditions. The knowledge-sharing sessions were moderated by experienced dermatologists and a gynecologist, fostering an academic and collaborative environment.

A notable highlight was a panel discussion titled “Derma, Gyn – A Chat Show on Hair Loss,” where expert speakers from both specialties discussed hair loss from multidisciplinary perspectives, enriching the understanding of attendees.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks and remarks that highlighted the importance of awareness, early diagnosis, and treatment of hair loss conditions among clinicians and patients alike. Trichoquest served as an impactful platform for education and interaction during Hair Loss Awareness Month, strengthening the commitment of the department towards advancing hair health knowledge and patient care.

Summary
PG Clinics 2025 was organized by the Department of Dermatology, SMVMCH, on August 21st and 22nd, 2025, at the Ground Floor Reading Hall, College Block, SMVMCH. The event was attended by 56 delegates. Each day, the sessions commenced at 9:00 a.m. and concluded around 4:00 p.m. The primary objective of the program was to enhance residents’ knowledge and reinforce key aspects of clinical dermatology, with a special focus on preparing them for the practical examination. Eminent faculty members from various institutions conducted highly interactive sessions, comprehensively covering all components of the final practical examination—long cases, short cases, spotters, topical and systemic therapeutics, dermatopathology, and dermatological instruments. All participants were awarded 3 credit hours by the Tamil Nadu Medical Council (TNMC). The two-day program offered residents practical strategies, structured approaches, and expert tips to sharpen their clinical acumen. It was well received by the attendees, providing them with valuable insights and confidence that will significantly benefit their future diagnostic and management skills.

Summary Report: Painting Competition on the Occasion of World Vitiligo Day
As part of the awareness initiatives for World Vitiligo Day, a painting competition was organized by the Department of Dermatology, Venereology, and Leprosy on 26.06.25, exclusively for undergraduate medical students. The event aimed to raise awareness about vitiligo, reduce social stigma, and encourage students to explore the emotional and psychosocial dimensions of skin disorders through art.

Awareness, acceptance, and the impact of treatment in transforming lives of Vitiligo patients and their caregivers
Participation and Response:
The competition received an enthusiastic response from students of various batches. Each student presented a unique artistic interpretation of the theme, combining creativity with clinical insight and social sensitivity.
Judging and Evaluation:
Entries were evaluated by a panel comprising faculty from the department of Dermatology. The judging criteria included originality, relevance to the theme, emotional impact, and artistic technique. Winners were awarded with certificates and Textbook of IADVL handbook for undergraduates by Dr.K. Karthikeyan, Head of the Department.

Summary
The Department of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy has organized a skin health awareness Camp in Girls High School in rural school of Edaiyar, Thiruvennainallur, Villupuram district, Tamil Nadu as a part of the Presidential initiative of CHALO PATHSHALA on 07 th January 2025 between 9:30 am to 12:00 pm. The Awareness program started with a brief introduction on Skin Health in adolescents by Dr. Suganya, Assistant

Professor Department of DVL SMVMCH. Special emphasis on common dermatoses in adolescence was highlighted by postgraduates Dr. Vanila and Dr. Pavithren. Around 55 students from classes 8 & 10 attended the awareness program. We have examined the students and gave free samples to them. The common dermatoses that were screened include Tinea corporis, Pityriasis versicolor, Acne vulgaris, Pediculosis capitis, and Miliaria rubra.

An appreciation letter was given by the school principal for conducting the camp.

The Department of Dermatology, Sri Manakula Vinayagar Medical College and Hospital (SMVMCH), in collaboration with the Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC), successfully organized a “Postgraduate Workshop on Patents and Copyrights – Postgraduate Role.” The program witnessed enthusiastic participation from postgraduate students and faculty members from Department of Dermatology, emphasizing the growing importance of innovation and intellectual property rights in the academic and research journey. The session was moderated by Dr. Karthikeyan, Professor and Head, Department of Dermatology, who highlighted the significance of innovation and intellectual property concepts among young researchers. The speaker, Dr. Logamoorthy R, Assistant Professor, Department of Dermatology, delivered an insightful talk covering the fundamentals of innovation, the importance of patents and copyrights, and practical steps involved in protecting intellectual property. Dr. Logamoorthy also introduced the participants to the Yukti portal—a platform initiated by the Government of India to foster innovation ecosystems in higher education institutions.

As part of the session, the postgraduate students were guided through the registration process on the Yukti portal, encouraging them to actively participate in innovation-based activities and contribute to the institution’s innovation profile. Furthermore, he elaborated on the Innovation Ambassador Program, encouraging postgraduates to actively engage in innovation-based activities and contribute to the culture of entrepreneurship and research within the institution. The workshop aimed to equip the participants with a clear understanding of how to identify novel ideas, the process of filing patents, distinguishing between copyrights and patents, and the opportunities available through institutional and national innovation frameworks. Real-life examples and case scenarios were shared to make the session highly interactive and relatable. Overall, the program was highly informative and motivated the postgraduates to explore innovative ideas within their academic work and clinical practice, marking an important step in building a strong innovation culture in SMVMCH.

Leprosy Camp

The Department of Dermatology Venereology and Leprosy has organized Leprosy awareness Camp in RHTC, Thiruvennainallur Villupuram district Tamil Nadu as a part of World Leprosy Day on 28th January 2025 between 9:30 am to 12:00 pm. The Awareness program started with a brief introduction, special emphasis and treatment on Leprosy by Dr. Logamoorthy , Assistant Professor Department of DVL SMVMCH. Pamplet distribution was done by Postgraduate Dr. Mira Tharani . Around 50 common public & patients attended the awareness program and they were later examined for any signs and symptoms of leprosy and managed accordingly.

Guest speaker of the event was Dr. Kumara Lakshmanan, Consultant at Royal care super specialty hospital and VS Skin and Laser Clinic , Coimbatore. The event started with welcoming the guest speaker by Dr. R.Suganya, Assistant Professor , Department of DVL , SMVMCH followed by an elaborative talk which covered the various options and up to date aspects of career guidance after completion of postgraduation by the guest speaker. The duration of the meet was 1 hour. Around 20 participants attended the meet which included faculties, postgraduates and CRRI from the Department of DVL .The session was moderated by Dr.Suganya Assistant professor Department of DVL SMVMCH. Informative pamphlets were distributed to enhance understanding and reinforce the importance of early diagnosis and adherence to treatment. The session was well-received, fostering a deeper awareness among attendees.
AIDS Quiz for Undergraduates (09.12.2024)

The quiz aimed to engage and educate undergraduate MBBS students on HIV/AIDS. The event began with a written preliminary round on December 5th, 2024, where four finalist teams were shortlisted. These teams competed in an intense nine-round finale on December 9th, showcasing their knowledge on various aspects of HIV/AIDS. The winners were awarded trophies for the First Place, First Runner-Up, and Second Runner-Up positions. Both events were highly successful, with active participation from students, faculty, and the general public. The initiative not only heightened awareness about HIV/AIDS but also encouraged meaningful conversations around prevention, treatment, and stigma reduction.

Summary

Our department recently conducted an interactive workshop aimed at enhancing the skills of dermatology postgraduates in writing case reports. The session was designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the structure, content, and nuances of a well-crafted dermatology case report.

The workshop included practical, step-by-step guidance on how to effectively present clinical cases, from selecting appropriate cases to writing clear and concise narratives. Participants were also trained on how to document important clinical findings, include relevant diagnostic tests, and present treatment outcomes in a systematic manner.

Throughout the session, attendees actively engaged in group discussions, analyzing sample case reports, and working on real-world cases. By the end of the workshop, participants had gained valuable insights into the essentials of academic writing in dermatology, with the aim to encourage more original contributions to dermatological literature.

Summary

World Psoriasis Day 2024, organized by the Department of Dermatology, SMVMCH, took place on October 29, 2024, in the hospital lobby at SMVMCH.

On October 28, a quiz focused on “Therapy in Psoriasis” was held for postgraduates. A preliminary written round selected three finalists, who then participated in a six-round final session. The finalists were awarded first place, first runner-up, and second runner-up positions.

On October 29, an awareness program was conducted to educate patients about the prognosis and course of psoriasis. Informative pamphlets were distributed to reinforce the key points. The awareness program primarily aimed to enhance the knowledge of patients and the general public. Summary

CUTICON 2024, organized by the Department of Dermatology, SMVMCH, in collaboration with IADVL Pondicherry, took place on October 6th, 2024 at MIT auditorium, SMVMCH. The event saw a total of 133 participants, including 86 residents and 25 faculty members. The program commenced at 9:00 a.m. and concluded at 6:00 p.m.

The primary objective was to enhance the knowledge of residents and introduce them to novel aspects and recent advancements in clinical dermatology. Faculty members from various institutions led the sessions, providing expert insights. Dr. K. Kaviarasan was honored with the Sardarilal Memorial Award, and he delivered the prestigious Sardarilal Oration.

A compendium of narrative reviews, written by faculty, alumni, and postgraduates, was released, and the contributors were honored during the event.

There were 10 award paper presentations, 22 free paper presentations, and 60 e-poster presentations, all contributed by postgraduate students.All participants were awarded 1 credit hour of TNMC credit points.

The program offered practical strategies and approaches aimed at improving participants’ clinical acumen. The event was well-received, providing valuable insights that will significantly contribute to the residents’ diagnostic and management skills.

Summary

PG clinics 2024, organized by organizing committee, department of Dermatology, SMVMCH happened on August 8th and 9th 2024 at 1st floor study hall, college block, SMVMCH. There were around 96 entries, out of which 80 residents attended the program. On both days, the program started around 9.00 am and ended around 4.00 pm.

The primary focus was to enhance the knowledge of residents and revice significant aspects of clinical dermatology, with specific guidance on practical examination.

Faculties from various institutions led the sessions and covered all segments of final practical examination – long case, short case, spotters, topical and systemic drugs in dermatology, dermatopathology and instruments in dermatology.

All the participants were awarded with TNMC credit points of 3 credit hours.

The program provided practical strategies and approaches , aiming to improve the clinical acumen of the participants. The event was well-received, offering valuable insights that will aid in enhancing the residents’ skills of diagnosing and management practices.

Summary

The Department of Dermatology Venereology and Leprosy has organized a CME on the topic SKIN CARE IN ADOLESCENTS as a part of gender sensitization program on 02nd August 2024 between 11:30 am to 12:30 pm. Guest speaker of the event was Dr.Damayandhi, Associate Professor, Department of Dermatology Venereology and Leprosy Aarupadai veedu medical college and hospital, Puducherry. The event started with a brief introduction about the seminar “Skin care in adolescents “by Dr. Karthikeyan K professor and Head, Dept of DVL SMVMCH. This was followed by an elaborative talk which covered the basics and up to date aspects of skin care in Adolescents by our guest speaker.

The duration of the CME was 45 minutes. Around 40 Participants attended the CME which included faculties from other specialties, postgraduates from the Department of DVL and undergraduates, and CRMI. The session was moderated by Dr.Suganya Assistant professor Department of DVL SMVMCH. The session ended with a vote of thanks. At the end of the program, Google Forms were sent to the participants for feedback and an e-certificate of participation was generated.

Summary

The Department of dermatology , venereology and leprosy organized the colloquium on June 28, 2024 held in the hospital basement auditorium at SMVMCH, the event took place from 2:15pm to 3:15pm.

The session started with the case discussion the first case was presented by Dr. Varshini on “Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis in Systemic sclerosis: A double trouble “.The case history and examination, diagnosis and management of the case were discussed among postgraduates by faculties. The differential diagnosis , systemic symptoms and signs , management, newer drugs in scleroderma were discussed.

The second case presentation was done by Dr.Vijayasuruthe on case titled “Systemic sclerosis with fibrotic Interstitial lung disease: A diagnostic dilemma”. After the presentation, brief discussion was done on interstitial lung disease, other pulmonary manifestations of scleroderma and management and newer drugs in interstitial lung disease associated with scleroderma.

The presentation provided better understanding of Scleroderma ,its systemic features and management. The presentors were felicitated by certificates .The event ended with the vote of thanks and was well received among the participants.

Summary :

World vitiligo day celebration was conducted on 27/06/24 ( Thursday ) and in view of this quiz on topic vitiligo was conducted for undergraduates medical students in the basement auditorium at Sri Manakula Vinayagar Medical College and Hospital. Initially prelims wasconducted in which about 27 teams participated out of which top 4 teams were selected for finals. In the finals about 7 rounds were conducted and top three teams were given momentos and certificates following which the event came to an end

The duration of the Guest lecture was 45 minutes. Around 110 Participants attended the Guest lecture, which included faculties and postgraduates from other specialties. The session was moderated by Dr.K. Karthikeyan, HOD Dept of DVL SMVMCH and Dr. Sanjay (Dean Research). World Lupus Day Celebration -2024

The Department of Dermatology Venereology and Leprosy has organized a CME on the Topic RECENT ADVANCES IN THE MANAGEMENT OF LUPUS ERYTHEMATOSUS as a part of WORLD LUPUS DAY celebration on 10th May 2024 between 2:15 pm to 3:30 pm. Guest speaker of the event was Dr. Sheetanshu Kumar, Assistant Professor, Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research [JIPMER], Puducherry. The event started with a brief introduction about the seminar “RECENT ADVANCES IN THE MANAGEMENT OF LUPUS ERYTHEMATOSUS” by Dr. Karthikeyan, Professor and Head, Dept of DVL SMVMCH. This was followed by an elaborative talk which comprised of a brief introduction to SLE followed by conventional treatment options and recent advances in managing lupus erythematosus by our guest speaker. The duration of the CME was 45 minutes. Around 50 Participants attended the CME which included faculties and postgraduates from the Department of DVL and medicine. The session was moderated by Dr. Logamoorthy, Assistant professor, Department of DVL SMVMCH. The session ended with vote of thanks. Skin Health Day

The Department of Dermatology Venereology and Leprosy celebrated SKIN HEALTH DAY on 12 th April 2024 between 11:00 am to 12:30 pm. The event started with a brief introduction about the celebration “SKIN HEALTH DAY” by Dr. Karthikeyan Professor and Head, Dept of DVL SMVMCH. A Speech competition was held among undergraduate students based on their awareness on skin health. Around 30 undergraduate students and 12 postgraduates attended the event and 9 undergraduates participated in the competition. The various topics which were discussed include Skin and Nutrition, Topical steroid damaged face, Skin care and youth. The competition was assessed by the Department faculties based on the presentation skills and awareness about the skin health. Top three participants were selected and prize was distributed. The session was moderated by Dr. Suganya Senior Resident Department of DVL SMVMCH.

Guest speaker of the event was Dr.Sandra Premkumar Specialist Dermatologist NMC Specialty hospital ABU DHABI. The event started with a brief introduction about the seminar “Biologicals in psoriasis“ by Dr. Karthikeyan K Professor and Head, Dept of DVL SMVMCH. This was followed by an elaborative talk which covered the basics and up to date aspects and also, she shared her personal experience of using biologics in Psoriasis. The duration of the CME was 60 minutes. Around 11 Postgraduates and four faculties from the Department of DVL attended the webinar. The session was moderated by Dr.Suganya Senior Resident Department of DVL SMVMCH. At the end of the program there was a discussion for 10 minutes with the postgraduates and faculties.

Genital Hygiene in Women – as a part of Gender Sensitisation programme – View Invitation

The Department of Dermatology Venereology and Leprosy has organized a CME on the topic “GENITAL HYGIENE IN WOMEN” as a part of gender sensitization program on 14th February 2024 between 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm. Guest speaker of the event was Dr. Sheela kuruvila, Professor & Head, Department of Dermatology Venereology and Leprosy, Aarupadai veedu medical college and hospital, Puducherry. Webinar – “Artificial Intelligence in DVL”

The Department of Dermatology Venereology and Leprosy has organized an online webinar on the topic ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN DVL on 30th January 2024 between 11:30 am to 12:30 pm. Guest speaker for the event was Dr. Aravind Baskar. M, Assistant professor, Department of Dermatology Venereology and Leprosy SRM Medical college Pother. The event started with a brief introduction about the webinar on Artificial intelligence by Dr. Karthikeyan. K Professor and Head, Dept of DVL, SMVMCH. This was followed by an in-depth webinar on localizing specific lesions, Role of AI in cutaneous malignancy, its advantages and disadvantages in dermatology. The duration of the webinar was 45 minutes. Participants of the webinar include postgraduates from the Department of Dermatology of DVL and postgraduates from SRM Medical college. The session was moderated by Dr. Vijayasankar.P, Assistant professor, Department of Venereology and Leprosy.

World Leprosy day – 2024

On the occasion of World Leprosy Day, Department of Dermatology Venereology and Leprosy organized various Departmental activities on the forenoon of 30th January 2024. The event was inaugurated by Medical Superintendent Dr. Pragash. M and Dr. Karthikeyan. K Professor and Head ,Dept of DVL, SMVMCH. Special activities of the event include Poster competition and exhibition, distribution of pamphlets to patients and free screening for OPD patients. Postgraduates from the Dept of Dermatology actively participated in the poster competition which was based on the theme “BEAT LEPROSY”. The poster competition was judged by Dr. Girija DMS -Medical and best poster was selected for prize distribution. Awareness speech was given to patients by postgraduates regarding nature of the disease, importance of early screening and proper adherence to treatment.

Funded Projects for PG’s:

ICMR thesis grant fund of Rs. 25,000/- for the thesis titled “Prevalence and patterns of dermatophytosis among school going adolescent girls: A community based cross – sectional study” done by Dr. J. Bhuvana (2023 – 2026 batch) postgraduate of SMVMCH under the guidance of Dr. K. Karthikeyan.
ICMR has allotted fund of Rs. 60,000/- for the ICMR-STS Project titled "A Clinical and Electro neurophysiological study of Leprosy Patients: A Hospital – Based Cross – Sectional Study” which is done by Devadharshini M.A (2022 – 2027 batch) undergraduate of SMVMCH under the guidance of Dr. P. Vijayasankar.
Indian Association of Dermatology, Venereology & Leprosy has allotted fund of Rs. 50,000/- for the thesis titled " Role of skin prick test in chronic idiopathic urticaria in a tertiary hospital” which is done by Dr. I. Soumiya (2022 – 2025 batch) postgraduate of SMVMCH under the guidance of Dr. Ramchander Darak.
