Event Name: From Competencies to records: Building the Ideal MBBS Log Book
Organized By: Dept of Medical Education unit (MEU)
Venue: Ground floor Own Book Reading Hall
Date: 06-11-2025
Time: 9:00 A.M – 1:00 P.M

Introduction

A workshop titled “From Competencies to Records: Building the Ideal MBBS Logbook” was organized by the Curriculum Committee of SMVMCH. The workshop aimed to support faculty in designing and standardizing competency-based logbooks in accordance with the latest 2024 CBME guidelines.

A Logbook Training Programme was conducted to familiarize faculty and departmental representatives with the importance, development, and refinement of logbooks under the Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) framework. The sessions aimed to standardize logbook practices across departments and ensure alignment with the latest CBME guidelines for 2024.

Objectives of the Workshop

The primary objective of the workshop was to enable faculty from all departments involved in the MBBS program to:

  • Collaboratively design departmental logbooks.
  • Standardize logbook formats and content across phases.
  • Align logbooks with CBME competencies, assessment methods, and learning outcomes
  • Ensure uniform implementation of competency-based documentation for undergraduate medical education.

Dr. K. Karthikeyan emphasized the essential role of logbooks in CBME, highlighting how systematic documentation supports competency tracking, student progress monitoring, and outcome-based assessments. The speaker outlined expectations for both faculty and students in maintaining logbooks effectively.

Participants were briefed on the updated 2024 CBME guidelines. The session covered additions and modifications required in existing logbooks, including competency mapping, assessment rubrics, and reflective learning components.

There was an interactive session which involved group activities where participants collaboratively designed or refined departmental logbooks. Coordinators guided teams in structuring competencies, aligning teaching–learning methods, and incorporating assessment tools. The activity fostered uniformity, innovation, and practical problem-solving.

Overall, the workshop served as a crucial platform to streamline logbook design practices across the institution. By bringing together faculty from all MBBS-teaching departments, the session aimed to enhance the consistency, quality, and effectiveness of competency documentation. Through collaborative involvement, the initiative sought to strengthen CBME implementation and improve outcome-based education for MBBS students.

Conclusion

The programme provided a comprehensive understanding of logbook development under CBME. Through expert guidance and collaborative activities, participants gained clarity on standardization, competency mapping, and documentation strategies. The training is expected to enhance the quality and consistency of logbooks across departments, ultimately contributing to improved medical education outcomes.
