On May 6, 2025, a unique and holistic event titled “Magic of Yoga in Asthma: An Innovative Approach” was organized to blend medical science with traditional wellness practices. Conducted jointly by the Department of Respiratory Medicine, IIC, NSS, and the Yoga Club, the event aimed to raise awareness about the role of yoga in asthma management while educating students and the broader community through a patient-focused and academic lens.
The program was held in two parts—an engaging awareness session in the Court Yard of the Hospital Block, followed by a comprehensive guest lecture in Lecture Hall 4 of the College Block. The event saw enthusiastic participation from undergraduate and postgraduate students, highlighting the growing interest in integrative medicine approaches.

The Department of Respiratory Medicine organized a Guest Lecture on “Academic Visit and Pulmonology Update” on 24th April 2025, featuring Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Emeritus Professor at the National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS), India. Dr. Rajendra Prasad stated his lecture on brief introduction about NAMS and elaborated about its membership patterns, working body & Sponsorships.
Dr. Prasad provided a detailed review of normal thoracic anatomy as seen on X-rays, highlighting common anatomical variants that can mimic pathology and cautioning students against misinterpretation. He demonstrated radiographic signs of various pulmonary conditions, including pneumonia, pleural effusion, pneumothorax, tuberculosis, interstitial lung disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lung masses, and mediastinal widening.
Pitfalls in interpretation were pointed out, such as overlooking subtle signs, misjudging under- or over-penetrated films, and misreading artifacts as pathology. He encouraged correlation with clinical findings and advised when to escalate to CT imaging. The lecture concluded with an interactive case discussion session where students participated in diagnosing cases based on provided X-rays, significantly enhancing engagement and learning retention.
In conclusion, the guest lecture by Dr. Rajendra Prasad was a highly enriching academic experience, with his clarity, case-based teaching, and emphasis on fundamental principles making the topic of chest X-ray interpretation highly accessible and clinically relevant. The Department of Respiratory Medicine was widely appreciated for organizing this impactful event.

The TAPPCON 2024 workshop focused on Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS), a critical diagnostic tool for respiratory and mediastinal diseases. The program offered participants a unique hands-on experience and in-depth knowledge of EBUS techniques and their clinical application.

The workshop began with a detailed discussion on Mediastinal anatomy. Dr. Saravanan S, PSG, Coimbatore had highlighted the significance of precise mapping in the diagnosis and staging of lung cancer, lymphoma and other thorasic diseases.
In the second session on EBUS – How Do I Do? Dr. Vishal Kumar Chitikeshi from KIMS Hospital, Secunderabad had provided a step-by-step demonstration of the EBUS procedure. Emphasis was placed on identifying each station and interpreting ultrasound images for needle aspiration in the mediastinum.
Dr. Behur Joel from Rela Hospital, Chennai shared the session on known your EBUS where he featured on the Technical aspects of EBUS.
The session on case Based Discussion was shared by Dr. Gangi Reddy T K. from trust Hospital, Bangalore. This interactive session allowed participants to understand the practical applications of EBUS in different clinical scenarios and how to approach complex cases.
Afternoon session included hands on workshop where the participants were offered a unique hands on experience in performing EBUS.

The Morning session was grassed by three eminent faculties who delivered lecture on various aspects and practical implication in Rigid Bronchoscopy. First lecture was delivered by Dr. Sabarinath Ravichandran, Consultant Pulmonologist, ESIC, Chennai on Airway Anatomy. The Second talk was delivered by Dr. S. Thiyagesa Deva Ganapathy, Consultant Pulmonologist, Adyar Cancer Institute, Chennai on Rigid Bronchoscopy – Tips and Tricks. The Third lecture was delivered by Dr. Yuvarajan .S Professor and Head Department of Respiratory Medicine, SMVMCH on Complications in Rigid Bronchoscopy. Delicates and Post graduates from various Hospital in around Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry participated in the workshop.
Afternoon session started at 2.00pm in the MIT Auditorium. During this session Delegates had a ‘hands on workshop’ session with Rigid Bronchoscopy which was Supervised by the Faculties.

CME on “SOMNOCON – 2024 – Better Sleep Better Life”
Department of Respiratory Medicine has organized CME cum Hands on Workshop “SOMNOCON – 2024 – Better Sleep Better Life” at SMVMCH on 20th February.
The Morning session was graced by 3 eminent faculties who delivered guest lecture on various aspects of sleep and each lecture lasted for 30 minutes. The first lecture was delivered by Dr.Subhasis Das from Department of Physiology – PIMS on physiology of sleep, Second lecture was by Dr. Srinivas Rajagopalan sir from Kavery hospital, Chennai on Evaluations & Interpretation of Diagnostic tests for OSA. Third lecture was on treatment of OSA by Dr.Thilagavathy from Vijaya Hospital, Chennai.
Afternoon session was started at 2.00pm in the Reading hall at Ground floor of College Block, during the session post graduates were briefed about various NIV devices. Polysomnography interpretation followed by hands on exposure to performing PSG.

This center aims at improving quality of life in COPD/Bronchial Asthma patients. These patients are taught proper technique of using inhalers and breathing exercises by well trained Respiratory Technicians. Patients are educated about the hazards of smoking, tobacco use and smoking cessation awareness created among patients.
Also tuberculosis patients are routinely counseled regarding the condition, need for completion of treatment and regular follow-up.
