Overview
The Department of Pharmacology was established under the guidance of Head of the Department by Dr.S.Basalingappa in the year 2006. Since then Experimental pharmacology laboratory, Clinical pharmacology laboratory, Department museum have been established. Our Department library contains all pharmacology related books for undergraduates, postgraduates and also for nursing students. Animal House was established in the year 2005. Recently Pharmacovigilance unit has been established for reporting of adverse drug reactions. Computer Assisted learning was implemented in the year 2017.

To become one of the globally distinguished research-intensive academic centers in the field of Pharmacology, by imparting highest quality of pharmacological training to the medical and paramedical students and promoting rational therapeutics.

- Knowing about essential and commonly used drugs and an understanding of the pharmacologic basis of therapeutics.
- Ability to select and prescribe medicines based on clinical condition and the pharmacologic properties, efficacy, safety, suitability and cost of medicines for common clinical conditions.
- Knowledge of pharmaco – vigilance, essential drug concept and list, sources of drug information and industry – doctor relationships.

At the end of the MD training programme in Pharmacology, the student should acquire competencies in the following areas:
- The student should be able to explain clearly concepts and principles of Pharmacology and therapeutics.
- The student should also be able to explain the drug development processes. S/he should be able to explain Drugs and Cosmetics Act, in addition to clinical trial procedures.
- The student should be able to effectively teach undergraduate students in medicine (MBBS) and allied health science courses (Dentistry and Nursing) so they become competent healthcare professionals and able to contribute to training of postgraduate trainees.
- The student should be able to carry out a research project (both basic and clinical) from planning to publication and be able to pursue academic interests and continue life-long learning to become more experienced in all the above areas.

Academics
Undergraduates
The department is training MBBS students, B.Sc. Nursing in both theoretical and practical aspects of pharmacology. The students are taught using various teaching methods like lectures, seminars, small group discussion, tutorials. Students trained in experimental pharmacology by Computer assisted learning (CAL) with the help of Animal simulator software purchased from Elsevier Company and implemented from November 2017. This helps to reduce use of animals for experimental purpose as per the guidelines of the Animal Ethics Committee.

Postgraduates
Four post graduate seats are available in the department of pharmacology since 2011. These students are trained in both theoretical and practical aspects of pharmacology. The Post graduates are trained in the form of Seminar, Journal club, PG classes, PG discussion, aiding in undergraduates theory and practical classes. They are trained in animal handling, bioassay experiments, computer assisted learning and the basics of clinical trials.

- Miss .M.S.Anugraha (149 batch) ,under the guidance of S.Nitya, has been awarded the Short Term Studentship (STS) for a period of two months at January 2017 for the project entitled “Drug utilization pattern in pregnancy at a tertiary care hospital in puducherrry-A Cross –Sectional observational study (ref.no-2016-01484).

The Department of Pharmacology, Sri Manakula Vinayagar Medical College and Hospital, Puducherry, has celebrated “Gender equity program” on 20 .01. 2026. Debate and chart-making competition conducted for Phase II MBBS in view of gender equity program celebration.
A debate and chart making Competition was held for Phase II MBBS students on January 20, 2026 in two sessions:
Chart making competition was conducted from 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM
Debate competition was conducted from: 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM
A total of six students participated in the debate competition. The topic given was “Gender equity in health care access: Myth or Reality.” Four students spoke in favor of the myth, and two students spoke in favor of the reality. The best-performing students were awarded 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prizes along with certificates and a trophy.
A total of six teams participated in the chart-making competition, with two students in each team. Students prepared charts based on the theme “Gender equity in health care.” The best-performing three teams were awarded 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prizes along with certificates and a trophy.
Certificated were provided for all the participants.

The session titled “Effective Study Strategies for Smarter Learning’’ was conducted for Phase II students with the objective of enhancing their academic performance through structured and efficient learning techniques. The resource person, Dr. Vijayasanthi, provided a comprehensive overview of key elements that contribute to effective and smarter studying
She began the session by introducing students to various scientific and practical approaches to learning, focusing on how adopting the right strategies can significantly improve retention, understanding, and long-term academic success. The talk covered essential aspects such as planning study schedules, using active learning techniques, self-assessment, and integrating clinical relevance into study routines. Students were also guided on the importance of setting clear goals and breaking down large topics into manageable units to ensure consistent progress.

The primary objective of the guest lecture was to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the CONSORT (Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials) guidelines and their application in the critical appraisal of randomized controlled trials (RCTs), an essential skill for evidence-based medical practice and research. Dr. Gerard Marshall Raj, Associate Professor, Department of Pharmacology, AIIMS, Bibinagar, Hyderabad, conducted the session. A Renowned expert in pharmacology and clinical research methodology. The speaker has extensive experience in guiding research and training students and faculty in scientific writing and critical appraisal.
Critical Appraisal Competition:
As part of the event, a Critical Appraisal Competition was conducted to encourage analytical thinking and research skills among participants. Participants critically evaluated selected research article using the CONSORT guidelines. The best appraisals were shortlisted by the speaker and winners were awarded prizes and certificates in recognition of their outstanding efforts.

The lecture was conducted online via Zoho and lasted for approximately 1 hour, including a dedicated Q&A session, during which participants interacted actively and clarified their doubts regarding the critical appraisal process.

The Department of Pharmacology, Sri Manakula Vinayagar Medical College and Hospital, Puducherry has celebrated “Pharmacovigilance Week – 2025” from 17.09.25 to 23.09.25 under the theme “Your Safety, Just a Click Away: Report to PvPI”. Essay writing/ Drawing/ Chart making competitions were conducted for BPT students and outreach program for patients to create awareness regarding ADR reporting was conducted.
Chart making competition
Chart making competition was conducted based on the theme “Your Safety, Just a Click Away: Report to PvPI” on 23.09.25 at 9:00 AM in the Clinical Pharmacology Lab of Department of Pharmacology. Total 3 teams with 2 students each were participated. One team was selected as the winner and were awarded with trophies and certificates. Other teams were awarded with participation certificates.
Drawing and Essay writing competition were conducted based on the above theme on 23.09.25 at 9:00 AM in the Demo-hall of Department of Pharmacology. Total 7 members (four in drawing competition and three in essay writing) were participated. Two persons from essay writing and one person from drawing competition was selected as winners and were awarded with trophies and certificates. Other members who are participated were also issued with participation certificates.
Pharmacovigilance Awareness Program
From 17th to 22nd September 2025, postgraduate students have conducted an awareness campaign on adverse drug reactions (ADRs) for patients at SMVMC Hospital and at PHC in Thirubuvanai. Pamphlets containing essential information about ADR reporting and its significance were also distributed to the patients.

The Department of Pharmacology has conducted a guest lecture by alumni for the phase II MBBS students on the topic “Smart Strategies in solving MCQs in Pharmacology” on 12.04.25 from 8:30 am to 9:30 am
On April 12th at 8:30 am, the Department of Pharmacology organized a guest lecture for Phase II MBBS students (206 students) titled “Smart strategies in solving MCQs in Pharmacology”. Dr. Renugadevi. P, Assistant Professor of Pharmacology from Melmaruvathur Adhiparasakthi Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, addressed the event as the guest speaker. The program commenced with a welcome address delivered by Dr. Shanthi M, Professor and Head of the Department. Following this, Dr. Nishanthi, Professor, introduced the guest speaker to the attending students. Dr. Renugadevi. P then provided a fascinating and insightful presentation on various strategies for effectively solving different types of multiple-choice questions in Pharmacology, helping students to overcome the fear of attending MCQs and also providing various ways to prepare for the competitive exams. The Department of Pharmacology has conducted a guest lecture for the phase II MBBS students in view of World Health Day on the topic “Pharmacological interventions for a Healthy start: Ensuring Optimal Health from Birth to Adulthood” on 07.04.25 from 9:30 am to 10:30 am
Description of the Report:
As per the schedule, on 7th April at 9:30 am, the Department of Pharmacology conducted a guest lecture for Phase II MBBS students on the occasion of World Health Day, titled “Pharmacological Interventions for a Healthy Start: Ensuring Optimal Health from Birth to Adulthood.” Around 216 MBBS students attended the guest lecture. The chief guest was Dr.Vimala Ananthy, Associate Professor of Pharmacology, MGMCRI. The welcome address was given by Dr. Shanthi M., Professor and Head of the Department. Dr. Nishanthi, A Professor, introduced the guest speaker to the audience. The speaker provided a fascinating insight into the different health care programs and measures. She instilled nuggets of inspiration in the students through her speech. The program came to an end with a Vote of thanks, following which Dr. Shanthi M honoured the speaker with a memento & Certificate.

The Department of Pharmacology, Sri Manakula Vinayagar Medical College and Hospital, Puducherry has celebrated “Gender equity program” on 21 .03. 2025. Rangoli and slogan competition conducted for Phase II MBBS and B.Sc Nursing students.
Description of the Report:
A Rangoli Competition was held on March 21, 2025, in two sessions:
- B.Sc. Nursing students: 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM
- Phase II MBBS students: 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM
Form the B.Sc. Nursing category, three teams (each with three members) were participated. Among the three the best-performed team was awarded the first prize, while all participants received gifts and participation certificates.
From the Phase II MBBS category, five teams were competed. Among the five teams the best performed first two team were awarded first and second prize respectively. The remaining participants were given gifts and participation certificates.
A total of 11 students from phase II MBBS were participated in slogan competition. Among, them one student was awarded first prize. while other participants received gifts and participation certificates.
