Overview
Mental health is as important as physical health. Mental illness is one of the leading causes of morbidity globally. Prevalence of mental illness in our country is grossly under-gauged. Thiscan be attributed to various reasons, which includes socialstigma, covert nature, and poor social awareness. Keeping this in the forestage, our institution has initiated the services in the domain of mental health in the year 2006. The Department of Psychiatry was formed with the most dedicated professional of the faculty. Initially, we the service was proved for about 10 patients per day. Gradually over years, we equipped ourselves with the state-of-the-art facilities and have attracted a minimum of 50 patients per day. The department is currently functioning with a team of scholarly faculties who strive to provide mental health services based on the latest evidence-based treatment protocol. With the aim of benefitting the underprivileged population, we have extended a helping hand.

World Mental Health Awareness Month 2025
Event Name: School Mental Health Awareness Programme
Organized By: Department of Psychiatry
Venue: Billabong International School, Puducherry
Date: 07.04.2025 & 08.04.2025
Description of the Event:
The Department of Psychiatry, Sri Manakula Vinayagar Medical College and Hospital (SMVMCH), was invited by Billabong High International School, Moolakulam, to conduct a two-day mental health awareness program for students of Classes 6, 7, 8, and 9 on April 7 and 8. The initiative aimed to educate adolescents on mental health, life skills, and emotional well-being through interactive and student-friendly approaches. The sessions were facilitated by departmental faculty members Dr. Velprasanth, Dr. Perarul, Dr. Souganyadevi, and Dr. Barath.
The program began each day at 09:30 AM, starting with opening remarks and the administration of pre-assessment forms to evaluate the students’ existing knowledge about mental health, adolescence, and life skills. This initial assessment provided a baseline understanding to guide the subsequent sessions. The first module introduced students to normal adolescent changes, covering the physical, emotional, social, and psychological developments characteristic of this stage. This helped normalize their experiences and encouraged open discussions about puberty-related transitions, mood fluctuations, identity, and peer influence.
Following this, the facilitators explored the Need for Life Skills, helping students understand why learning essential coping and interpersonal skills is crucial to mental and emotional well-being. The session focused on equipping adolescents with tools to navigate academic stress, peer pressure, and emotional ups and downs. A key highlight of the program was the session on WHO-Recommended Life Skills, where facilitators explained the ten core domains defined by the World Health Organization. These include self-awareness, empathy, interpersonal relationships, communication, decision-making, problem-solving, creative thinking, critical thinking, coping with stress, and coping with emotions. Each skill was explained with real-life examples relevant to the students’ daily lives. To encourage active participation and experiential learning, students were divided into 10 groups, each assigned one of the life skills. They engaged in hands-on activities and role plays designed to illustrate the practical application of these skills. This interactive component brought abstract concepts to life, making them relatable and easier to internalize. After the activities, the program moved into a group reflection session, where each group presented their experiences, insights, and takeaways. Students discussed how life skills could help them manage everyday challenges such as conflicts with friends, academic stress, decision-making, and emotional regulation.
In a dedicated session on addressing stigma, students were encouraged to speak openly about mental health, support peers experiencing emotional difficulties, and seek professional help without fear of being judged or labeled. The discussion also challenged prevalent myths and stereotypes associated with mental illness. At the end of the program, post-assessment forms were administered to measure the knowledge gained and attitudinal shifts following the sessions. Students also provided individual feedback, most of which reflected high levels of satisfaction, increased awareness, and a desire to learn more about mental health.
The program concluded at 4:00 PM on both days and was widely appreciated by the school management and students for its interactive, engaging, and empathetic approach. It served as a significant step in promoting mental well-being and life skills among adolescents in a school setting

Testimonials

When I recall my PG years at SMVMCH, I get nostalgic. These three wonderful years had taught me many valuable lessons and provided me with priceless memories. In addition, I consider myself fortunate to have worked under the supervision of our HOD, Dr. S. Arun, who was always encouraging us to do more. Arun sir has inspired not only me, but also all of the PG’s in our department, to strive for excellence in the subject. During My PG period, I met my mentor, Dr, Vinoth Krishnadass, who was not only a consultant but also treated us like family. Vinoth sir das been there for us through all of our difficulties over the last three years and continue to do so in our hearts. Our interest in research and event planning are just a few of the many thinks we learnt from Vinoth sir, and I hope to do my best to make him proud. Dr. Venkatarangan Sir’s approach to patients and caring nature have greatly influence me and I will remember him for his kind gestures. Overall, my time at SMVMCH was a dream come true and Irreplaceable.
I am Dr. S. Perarul, was pursuing Post Graduation in the department of Psychiatry for the academic year 2019- 2022. My three years tenure in the department is the sole reason for what I am today. The amount of knowledge I gained in the field of psychiatry is from my beloved professors. I am privileged to be trained under them. My beloved professor and head Dr. S. Arun is a person with knowledge and shared his experience for effective management of the patients. He taught me the nook and corner in Psychiatry, and enriched me with knowledge. I am greatly thankful for Dr. K. Vinoth, my professor and well-wisher who helped me in the department as well as in my personal life. He taught me many values in life, which helped me to grow as a person. He is my idle in effective management of aggressive patients and certain specific areas in psychiatry. I am thankful to Dr. K.S Venkatarangan, who taught me to take history taking with ease. His way of seeing patients is an inspiration for me. My only suggestion is to increase adequate space for PG’s to see cases and exclusive demo room which would develop the department more in near future.

I can proudly say that our department is one of the best departments. Our HOD Dr.S.Arun, Late Professor Dr.K.Vinoth, Dr.V.Souganyadevi Mam, Dr.K.S.Venkatarangan sir, Dr.S.Perarul sir, everybody in the department loved academic activities and made these past 3 years a memorable experience. They made sure we learnt and kept themselves updated to make us understand that we can learn something if we pay attention. We had peripheral postings at NIMHANS which exposed us to child psychiatry, forensic and rehabilitation psychiatry services. It was a while new experience. Our department was not only interested in case presentations and seminars but also taught us how to conduct and co-ordinate CMES and other activities. Our department was more like a family to me and it taught me how to learn and have fun but also life values. There is not enough words I know of to express how grateful I was to spend my 3 years here. Our consultants allowed us to take our own call and made sure to walk along the way to correct if we made mistakes and applaud if we did well. They also made our mental health a priority, which was a bonus. Thanks again from the bottom of my heart and if I got the chance again, I wouldn’t change a single thing.
My pg life of three years in SMVMCH was wonderful. Those pg days thought me many things which are needed for life and also gave me beautiful memories. We were gifted to work under the supervision of our hod Dr.Arun sir he was very encouraging and motivating us to do more. Our beloved Prof. Dr.Vinoth K was one of the best person i met during my lifetime. He is very humble and kind hearted person that i have ever met. He treated us as his family and supported me during my ups and down. We have learnt how to organise CME, conferences and events under him. I am thankful to Dr.K.S Venkatrangan he as thought how to approach to patients and how to take history from patients. I am Thankful to our Assistant Prof. Dr.Souganyadevi she was very energetic and enthusiastic person she has thought us lot and she was friendly with us at the same time she is strict in academics. I also thankful to our Senior resident Dr.Perarul, He was very supportive and encouraged us during our Pg days. My three years in SMVMCH where memorable ones. I Suggest the management to give Pg’s separate room for seeing patient, separate demo room and also suggest in patient ward in ground floor itself and near to Psychiatric OPD.

Everybody in the department my seniors who accommodated us well and my juniors , psychologist, social worker, staff in op and ward staffs all made a valuable part of the pg period. With scheduled Academic activity and friendly learning environment was ensured throughout our course . Readily available faculties and approachable Professors and Head for any doubts made us more comfortable to clear our queries.
We had peripheral postings in department of medicine and neurology where we were able to go through the organic aspect of psychiatry. Also had an exclusive posting at NIMHANS which exposed us to child psychiatry, forensic and rehabilitation psychiatry services. It provided a whole lot of new experience and also reassured us we are on par with central institutes in management. Apart from academic activities our department also provided us opportunities to involve in various forums in colleges both academic and non-academic. Also brought out the inner potential within us and given chances to organise CME , guest lecture , day celebration and mental health week celebration. Also involved us in outreach activities pertaining to mental health. With such a peaceful enriching environment my 3 years just flown. As being department of Psychiatry they also ensured mental wellbeing everyone in the department and provided timely support by all possible means. I can keep on speaking but ….. i shall stop here , so once again I would thank from the bottom of my heart to my department and also to the institution for provide such a wonderful department.
